Con stuff (09:32 PM EST):
Starting tomorrow is the official start of A-Kon, one of the more interesting conventions that takes place down in Texas. We've managed to get our grand high licensing list keeper, Mariela, to cover the scene and all the panels, so we should be hearing back over the weekend all kinds of juicy gossip. If you're visiting A-Kon and have net access over the weekend, don't hesitate to send us what you hear as well!

Press (09:29 PM EST): TRSI has sent out their latest press releases for July and August, both of which contain AnimeTrax CD listings and some detailed descriptions of various DVD's.

Newly licensed? (06:07 PM EST): Keeping up with Mr. Sirabella can be a full time job! According to a separate post on the forum, he's indicated that they're releasing in association with Enoki Films the show Gokudo kun (known as Jester on the Enoki site I believe) as well as the Fortune Quest TV series. Why wait till Anime Expo for the announcements!

New title announcement (06:03 PM EST): Courtesy of David Williams, we now know that the second box set of Robotech will arrive on 8/7/2001. The box set will contain volumes 3 and 4 as well as a disc of extras. The disc of extras should include commercials for the Robotech toys, including some that weren't released; an interview Carl Macek did right before the movie was released; a promo piece Harmony Gold did at a Robotech con; character sketches; production sketches; more international clips; the comic book covers from the Macross Saga. Volumes 3 and 4 are also available separately. If only box 1 would show up!

New title clarifications (05:52 PM EST): We got the early specs in for the Media Blasters titles listed yesterday. All titles are due on 9/25, and prices are kind of all over the place, but in an interesting way.

Magic Users Club TV Vol. #1 gives you 4 episodes for 24.95$ (a trend I hope we start seeing more of), Space Travelers gives you 60 minutes of this self-contained OVA for 24.95$, Rurouni Kenshin TV Vol. #12 gives you 100 minutes for 29.95$, Marriage gives you 60 minutes for 19.95$, Zenki gives you 325 minutes for 39.95$ and Slight Fever Syndrome gives you 75 minutes for 29.95$

We've also learned via John Sirabella on the forums that he's intending to do all 52 episodes of Zenki if the first collection of 13 sells well and the second batch of 13 sells well. Blocks of 13 episodes for 39.95$ is something I don't think many people will complain about and will certainly encourage people to try it out.

Digital Omake (07:34 PM EST):
Several new additions today to the Digital Omake section, including two for Escaflowne Vol. #8, Trigun Vol. #8, Street Fighter TV and Revolutionary Girl Utena Vol. #1.

New title announcements (08:16 AM EST): The Right Stuf site is listing some new titles from Media Blasters that are due out on 9/25/2001. The information is very minimal at this point (and contains some likely live action titles), so we'll add them to our database once the final specs/runtimes come out:

  • Killer Barbys
  • Magic Users Club TV, "I wanna do more"
  • Space Travelers
  • Rurouni Kenshin12: Blind Justice
  • Marriage
  • Zenki
  • Sure Death
  • Slight Fever Syndrome Complete

Correction (07:58 AM EST): In last nights press release for Arc the Lad Vol. #3, the press release incorrectly lists the title as having 3 episodes. The press release was written up prior to the change in episode count, and slipped through. The disc will have a runtime of 125 minutes, as well as discs 4,5,6. Price remains unchanged.

Press (08:46 PM EST):
ADV films have sent out their latest press bits, this time of Evangelion 8 and Arc the Lad 3.

HDTV (07:04 PM EST): It's been almost a year since we got in our HDTV and we've finally added Step 6 on our Path to HDTV, which details 4:3 material playback.

Video Girl Ai (04:12 PM EST): If you ordered the region 2 box set of Video Girl Ai, we've finally gotten a glimpse at what the box set will look like as well as a partial look at the keepcase artwork. Check out this link which was posted to our region 2 forum today.

Studio Challenge (09:46 AM EST):
The shelves got slightly adjusted this time around and we've decided to get a jump on the May image of the Studio Challenge.

Article (08:30 AM EST): Oliver Chin is back this week with an article about promoting both manga and anime at the same time such as Gunsmith Cats and Black Jack.

Petition (08:22 AM EST): With news out of Animazement that TOKYOPOP has acquired the manga rights to Marmalade Boy and Kodomo no Omacha, it's only fitting that a petition to bring Marmalade Boy to the US be added to the site today. It's chances definitely do grow now that the manga has been acquired.

R2 Mononoke (08:11 AM EST): Good news cropped up for the UK R2 fans this week with notice that the BBFC (a ratings board for home video releases) has approved a listing for Princess Mononoke. No date has been given, but seeing it by the end of the year is very likely for fans there.

Interview (08:10 AM EST): Jeff Kleist over at DVD Angle has posted his latest column this past week which contains an interesting interview with Carl Macek and provides some interesting insights into how Robotech came about.

R2 Berserk treat (08:05 AM EST): For those who aren't particularly fond of the long cardboard box layout of the Berserk box set, an alternative fan made creation has popped up which you can find here.

Press (08:04 AM EST): The folks at TOKYOPOP have sent out a press release about the upcoming Miyu soundtrack, which definitely sounds good and especially at that price.

Newly reviewed (03:30 PM EST):
Another pass into the review pile and we've taken a viewing of the April release of Knights of Ramune.

More con news (09:51 AM EST): Eugene Bur wrote in with some more information from yesterdays AnimEigo convention panel:

"Animeigo is in the process of buying the rights to Spirit of Wonder again, and they say that should happen by next summer.

Otaku no Video is expected to go to authoring this fall. Crusher Joe is on their 'want to make happen' list. They say they've worked out all their bugs and learned the authoring process with their first discs, and expect that future releases will come out much faster.

Oh! My Goddess disc, which we saw a preview of, has great extras, including a slide show, a commentary track, and a dub your own track (music and effects only)."

There was also a bit of Bandai news:

Concerning the Cowboy Bebop boxed set, Bandai has said that they will not offer the case or any extras separately, which I think is a big 'bend over' to all the fans who made that show happen.

Newly reviewed (08:48 AM EST): Originally released back on 12/20/2000, we've finally made our way to watching Nightmare Campus from CPM. Sometimes it's just hard watching hentai when you're briefly living with your parents!

Saturday, May 26th, 2001

Advance review (06:07 PM EST):
Once more into the pile and we've gone through the mental mind-wreck that is known as Neon Genesis Evangelion Collection 0:8. Yet another series has finally completed!

Con news (05:49 PM EST): Krellion from the site chat channel has given out some info from the Animazement convention running this weekend. Urusei Yatsura TV Box 2 is in replication and shipment date is expected to be about 2-3 weeks from now. Urusei Yatsura TV Box 3 is in production and is quickly approaching replication as well, with a tentative 45 days before AnimEigo thinks they'll send it off to be replicated. The first Oh! My Goddess disc (which has a release date with many retailers) is looking to be replicated in about 45 days as well. Disc 2 of Oh! My Goddess is expected to contain a few music videos as well. Vampire Princess Miyu Vol. #2 is still in the authoring stages and is looking at a late summer release (though a date has been announced to retailers). Baoh is also still in the authoring stages and is expected for late summer release.

Slightly advance review (05:25 PM EST): Due out on 6/5/2001 is the next release in what I consider to be a light and fun series much like Outlaw Star, for an obvious release. Check out our thoughts on Bandai's Angel Links Vol. #2.

Newly reviewed (04:40 PM EST): Digging into the pile a bit more, we've completed our review for the Project A-Ko: Love & Robots disc that was released on 5/8. Poor A-Ko just can't catch a break!

Advance review (03:51 PM EST): Due out on 7/3/2001 from Bandai is the first volume of Gundam: 08th MS Team. Having finished the disc, this show has definitely rekindled a spark for the classic show that is Gundam and the UC timeline.

Friday, May 25th, 2001

TOKYOPOP tidbit (06:00 PM EST):
According to a mention on the forum via second hand information, The TOKYOPOP release of Vampire Princess Miyu contains the laserdisc release, which means the episodes contain the slightly bloodier release that didn't get aired without edits. Contrary to my original belief, this was done for just about the entire run of the series in Japan, so it's really great to get the unedited complete version here.

Alternate Angles (11:34 AM EST): Let's see if we can sneak in a few alternate angle reviews here while the baby is asleep...

Forum (09:52 PM EST):
Please note that the forum has changed its location, it's now here. Please update your bookmarks if you link directly.

Pioneer explains CCS 4 (10:03 AM EST): The Right Stuf site has given an explanation via Pioneer about why Cardcaptor Sakura #4 is due out in January 2002:

Pioneer Entertainment regrets to announce that Cardcaptor Sakura 4: Sakura Fight! has been postponed to January 2002 in accordance to our Licensor's request. This request does not affect other Cardcaptor Sakura volumes, so Cardcaptor Sakura 5: Vacation Daze will still be released on 9/11/01.

Pioneer Entertainment appreciates your patience and your understanding regarding this unexpected and unfortunate delay and we will attempt to compensate you, our loyal consumers, for the delay through an additional limited edition bonus available with the release of Volume 4. We will announce more details later this year as they become finalized. Thank you for your continuing support.

Personal thoughts removed.

More new title announcements (10:03 AM EST): The Right Stuf site has updated again with some more new titles that are convincing me I'm going to need a third job. Due out on 8/28 is the first volume of Vampire Princess Miyu TV and Saint Tail. Both discs have a running time of 75 minutes and a retail price of 29.99$. Both discs are bilingual releases, though it's worth noting that there will be a dub VHS released alongside them, but not subtitled VHS.

New title announcements (08:55 AM EST): The Right Stuf site is updating again, this time making CCS fans happy. Cardcaptor Sakura Vol. #4 will have a Jan 15 2002 release date while Cardcaptor Vol. #5 will have a 9/11/2001 release date. Both retail for 29.99$.

Manga titles (07:24 AM EST): The folks at Manga have adjusted their upcoming schedule a bit. A number of titles on their list previously have yet to be announced and street dates were coming up, so many of them have been bumped to a later date or place in the no date section. The bump that will annoy some folks is Blood being moved from 7/31 to 8/28, but others will be pleased to finally see X slated for a 9/25 release. The list now only goes up to September 25th, so the October discs aren't as set. What was due in October? Giant Robo 1 & 2 and the two Evangelion movies. I've essentially removed most of the Manga titles from our upcoming list and tweaked what remains on theirs into ours. Can you guess that I hate release lists?

Filing under "rumor" (07:12 AM EST): A post in the forum by an E3 attendee indicated that a Pioneer rep at E3 (the Electronics Entertainment Expo held just last week) gave notice that they've licensed Gatekeepers and intend to have it out in September. If true, it's again great to see Pioneer branching out into licensing more titles that aren't part of the family stable. An announcement similar to this was made in the previous year or two as well, so it's probably likely, but we're treating it as a rumor until we get an official confirm.

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2001

More new title announcements (05:42 PM EST):
David Williams of ADV has just posted that they will be releasing the first volume of the Original Dirty Pair OVA series onto DVD on 7/17/2001. This disc will contain the first 5 of 10 OVA's and if it sells well (as it should), it should help spur the acquisition of the full TV series. And we need the TV series. TV series would cause much happiness among many people. So buy!

DVD packaging hubs (05:21 PM EST): "CapZman" sent us a link to a site that does indeed prove that just about anything can be put on the net. Check out this site about DVD cases and hubs, which also includes a handy-dandy Scanavo how-to remove guide!

New title announcements (12:37 PM EST): According to an update at AnimeNation, Hand Maid May Vol. #1 and Niea_7 Vol. #1 will both street on 08/14/2001. Both volumes will contain 4 episodes and retail for 29.99$. Pioneer's making Niea_7 their first DVD exclusive release, something other companies have been doing for a bit now. Hand Maid May runs for 10 episodes plus 1 special direct to video episode at the end and Niea_7 runs for 13 episodes.

According to TRSI, Sailor Moon S TV Vol. #4 will arrive on 8/14 as well, bringing more Sailor Moon goodness to its fans. TRSI has also announced their latest title acquisition and release, Yamamoto Yohko, Starship Girl, which will be out on 9/25 for 39.95$, containing the six OVA's. I've personally not heard this title being licensed yet, so hopefully we'll learn more soon!

Not so delayed (06:52 PM EST): After we posted the information yesterday on certain Pioneer delayed discs, some new information came to light with different dates. According to the Pioneer rep posting in the forum, the Fushigi Yugi OVA box set is scheduled to street on 6/5 and the Kishin Corps/Geo Armor disc is on 6/19. Kishin was delayed initially awhile ago to move up to a 2 disc release to improve video quality, and this secondary delay was due to the discovery of two episodes being dubtitled instead of properly subtitled, so that needed to be fixed. Both releases are now in replication.

Monday, May 21st, 2001

Coming soon? (08:36 PM EST):
According to AnimEigo's site, the Urusei Yatsura TV DVD Set 2 is now in replication. No indication is given as to when the set will be available for those who've preordered, but I'd bet it'll be soon based on how quickly Vampire Princess Miyu was done.

Slightly advance review (08:26 PM EST): Due out on 5/29/2001, we've gotten a look at the 5th volume of Martian Successor Nadesico over the weekend and have compiled our thoughts on it.

More new title announcements (06:55 PM EST): The folks at Bandai have let loose a few more announcements today, such as the dub only edition of Mobile Suit Gundam Vol. #1 for 24.95$ and Angel Links Vol. #3 for 29.99$. Both are due on 08/07/2001. Due on 08/21/2001 is the next release of the very cool Big O Vol. #2, also retailing for 29.99$

Delays! (05:01 PM EST): We haven't had much of these lately in the way of actually learning about them in advance, but TRSI posted a few new delays today. Crest of the Stars Vol. #1 will now arrive on 6/5 (with subsequent volumes coming every two months, so August for #2), Cardcaptors TV Dub will move to 7/10 and the most devastating ones are Geo-Armor/Kishin Corps and the Fushigi Yugi OVA box to 7/23. Ouch, the end of July only gets more insane.

New title announcement (04:59 PM EST): ADV Films has announced the release date for the final volume of Martian Successor Nadesico. Vol. #6 will arrive on 8/28/2001 and will contain the remaining 5 episodes (the show is still coming out on VHS, so this is much like Bebop's release in that the DVD started later than the VHS but both will finish at the same time.). Price is 29.99$ for the 125 minutes of show.

Synch Point tidbits (02:28 PM EST):
A few little things have cropped up over the past day or two regarding the upcoming releases of Synch Point's. Originally, the DVD for FLCL was planned for after the VHS, but it now appears that this series will arrive at the same time though no dates are set yet. They're still looking at 2 OVA's per disc as well as getting some extras (which I hope will be a subtitled version of the Pillows music video that's on one of the discs). For Tenshi ni Narumon, it's still looking like that will be release to DVD after the tapes start rolling out.

Upcoming releases (09:26 AM EST): Bound to make a number of people happy, we've reworked our upcoming release list into a workable database that provides several ways of sorting the 149 titles currently listed in there.

Contests (02:01 PM EST):
Now that we've had a moment to breathe, we've finalized our winner for the Right Stuf sponsored Battle Angel contest and have posted the results. We've also kicked off another Right Stuf sponsored contest that's going to challenge a wide variety of the creative anime fandom out there. We're talking video, audio drama, visual and written. Check out what we've got going for the latest contest!

Friday, May 18th, 2001

Press (05:34 PM EST):
The folks behind the upcoming Big Apple Anime Fest have sent out a press release about an international cosplay contest that their site will be hosting. The prize? A trip from anywhere in the world to the BAAF or 1500$ cash... Someplace to check out to be sure!

Bandai tweaks again (10:18 PM EST):
According to a bit of information posted in the forums by Charles McCarter of Bandai Entertainment, the discs that are currently being authored will be done so that they recognize player defaults that you may have set on them. For those like myself who have their players set to default on Japanese language with English subtitles, this is one more thing that lets us get to the content sooner. After recently making the opening logos and FBI warnings skippable, this is another great move.

Press (10:07 PM EST): We got in the press release today from TOKYOPOP for their upcoming TOKYOPOP Soundtrax line which we mentioned briefly yesterday. For the 14.98$ price tag and the titles selected, it looks like their music division could be off to a great start.

Newly reviewed (09:55 PM EST): Just to get a little more of the backlog out of the way, we squeezed in the 60 minute double feature release of Ninku/Yu Yu Hakusho this evening.

Newly reviewed (09:25 PM EST): We took off the beginning part of the week and caught up on some day to day things, but we started again last night with the anime and have finished the Saber Marionette Collection 2 disc set. Does it improve over the original set?

DVD Girl Ai (12:53 PM EST): A brief blurb on UMJAMS today indicates that Viz will be releasing Video Girl Ai on DVD in region 1 later this year. The six OVA series will be released on two DVD's in bilingual format, the first in September and the second in December. No information on prices, exact dates or other features at this time.

Wednesday, May 16th, 2001

Fushigi delayed? (06:11 PM EST):
Rather surprising, but almost all retailers and other listing sites seem to indicate that the Fushigi Yugi OVA box set is now without a date. We'll see if we can gather some more information.

TOKYOPOP news (03:24 PM EST): Forum reader Grimlock sent us a bit of news today, after doing the sensible thing and calling TOKYOPOP to get the straight story on their upcoming releases for Vampire Princess Miyu:

  • They are planning a domestic DVD release
  • It will be bilingual
  • They are looking at September to start releasing them
  • The series will be spread over 8 discs
  • Pricing will be about $30 per disc
  • They also plan on releasing the soundtrack domestically either in August or September

Browsing through the TOKYOPOP site, you'll also notice what appear to be upcoming soundtracks for Trigun and Bubblegum Crisis 2040...

Convention Guide (08:47 AM EST): So who's up for some anime activism? We've started off our Anime Convention Panel Guide today, based off of feedback from the forum we requested awhile ago. This will be an evolving list over time and something I hope to helps solve some of the problems that are out there.

More on Wings (08:25 AM EST): For those who've been hoping to see some R1 vs. R2 screen shot comparisons of the Wings of Honneamise release, forum regular Skywise has posted some interesting shots at this site. It's about 1.1 meg in total, so it will take a bit to load. Honestly, be prepared to be startled by some of it.

AoD Recommends (05:28 PM EST):
Our recommendations page has gotten a new update today, with the first entry in our region 2 section. Check out what Lee Johnson has to say about My Neighbor's the Yamada's!

Newly licensed (05:00 PM EST): Bound to surprise a lot of folks, Vampire Princess Miyu TV and Saint Tail have been acquired for domestic distribution. TOKYOPOP has acquired the rights to the 26 episode Miyu series and the 43 episode Saint Tail series. No indication of what/how it will be released, simply a little blurb on their site that they've got it. We should have an idea about their DVD production plans based on the upcoming release of Spring & Chaos that's due on 5/29. Thanks to JCollis and the folks on the anime on DVD IRC chat channel for letting us know.

Ceres, Celestial Legend info (02:22 PM EST): A bit of info has popped up on the Right Stuf site:

Viz and Pioneer have released further information on the 7/31 release of Ceres, Celestial Legend Volume 1: Destiny on VHS / DVD.

The official press release indicates that it is the first volume in an 8 volume set. Current plans are to have 3 episodes per volume. The DVDs will be bilingual (English / Japanese) with extras such as artwork, character backgrounds, and exclusive interview footage with Yű Watase.

AnimEigo tidbits (10:41 AM EST): According to the AnimEigo site, the first volume of Vampire Princess Miyu will begin shipping on 5/15/2001. They also note that some of the Urusei Yatsura TV Vol. #1 that were recently replicated for mainstream release slipped through without the liner notes, and their main page describes how to acquire these little godsends.

New title announcement (08:46 PM EST):
Though news from Anime Central appears to be fairly thin overall, David Williams of ADV has returned to the forums and posted a new title announcement today. Due on 8/21/2001, Orange Road: Summer's Beginning will arrive. No info on price or features yet.

Press  (05:56 PM EST): The latest press release from ADV has arrived, heralding the 7/10 release of Blue Seed Vol. #2.

Bandai tidbit/general  (05:31 PM EST): A couple of readers sent us a bit of news regarding Bandai, and a state of the industry in general. As seems to be the way, Love Hina's eventual release will be DVD only. Considering most folks aren't expecting it until next year, it makes even more sense. Most of Bandai's releases for this year are DVD only already. The general feel is that unless it's part of their TV lineup, it'll get the disc only treatment. But even there things aren't as they seem. The Big O won't be getting a VHS release and it looks as if Pilot Candidate won't be either. Indications from other studios including ADV is that the dub tape market is moving south pretty fast. And while it's not the best bellwether to go by, check your local Suncoast. Mine just moved all the anime tapes to the side back wall and has given the prime position to the anime DVD's buy doubling the space they used to have.

It's a DVD world folks!

Pioneer tidbit (05:24 PM EST): A little tidbit has arrived that we just may be seeing the next Pioneer series, NieA_7, arriving this August. Apparently the dub for the first two episodes has played at a few conventions already.

Akira's official (05:22 PM EST): The official press release has come about for Akira today, and it's pretty much coming down the road as expected. July 24th will definitely be a sweet day of anime viewing!

Box sets (05:18 PM EST): Are you like me and wanting some nicely designed non-cheap looking boxes to store your anime DVD's in? The solution is close at hand my friends...

More Anime Central news (06:44 AM EST): Forum regular LejuN posted some new information from Anime Central late last night:

  • John Sirabella of Media Blasters was asked about when a "less cut" Kite will make it to DVD. He stated that it would be on DVD by December.
  • FLCL from Synch Point will have more than one episode per disc, but it's not locked down yet, and speculation leads to 2 episodes/3 discs total.
  • Asked about acquiring more shoujo based on Princess 9's sales, ADV's Matt and David both gave enthusiastic responses of yes. They said there many series that they are eyeing, and would love to bring them over if people were interested.
  • ADV also said that they are very happy with the 6 disc release schedule, and will be using it for a lot of future releases.
  • And finally, "Ardith (of Synch Point) looked great in her black dress".

Sunday, May 13th, 2001

Anime Central news (08:58 PM EST):
The first tidbits from the Anime Central convention this weekend are now starting to trickle in and we expect to hear more during the week (and if we haven't posted it, let us know about it!). According to forum reader Don, some interesting bits came up during the Right Stuf panel regarding Kare Kano:

  • They'll be doing alternate angles for next episode previews
  • There will be multiple subtitle tracks
  • It will most likely be 4 DVD's
  • Title will be "His & Her Circumstance" (unless I didn't hear an "s" at the end)

Cover art (04:30 PM EST): An expanding piece can be found on AnimEigo's site, but the cover art for Vampire Princess Miyu Vol. #1 is now up and available.

Advance review (03:27 PM EST): Due out on 6/12/2001 from ADV Films is the first volume of the fan favorite and classic series, Nadia, the Secret of Blue Water. Our copy arrived late last week and we've given it a good run through on our setup.

Saturday, May 12th, 2001

Anime Love (03:35 PM EST):
The crew over at Anime Love is celebrating the arrival of their new mascot with a contest, which you can check out here. Kudos to Riki LeCotey who did the design of the mascot and whose done some incredible stuff for us here as well. I wish I could hire her full time!

Newly reviewed (03:07 PM EST): One of Central Park Media's other releases this past week was the four OVA compilation of the Mystery of the Necronomicon from their Anime 18 line. One of the few titles to truly give me the shivers!

Advance review (09:14 AM EST): Due out on 7/10/2001, we've taken a look at ADV's initial offering for their next TV series, Orphen Vol. #1

Friday, May 11th, 2001

New title announcement (10:33 PM EST):
Urban Vision has sent out their latest press release talking about their 7/17/2001 release of the 90's Gatchaman OVA. The disc will contain all of the OVA's that were released in separate tapes for the low price of 29.95$.

ADV subtitles (06:24 PM EST): One of the most recent concerns with ADV's discs has been with the unusually large subtitle fonts (which I personally haven't minded). They've been tinkering behind the scenes and have come up with a font style that will likely be more pleasing on the eye for folks. Expect to see it filtering into new releases starting with Gasaraki Vol. #5, Nadia Vol. #1 and others. Having seen it on a couple of discs now, it's definitely much improved.

CPM tidbits (06:22 PM EST): A question to the CPM folks on our forum recently asked about the upcoming releases of Sohryuden and Detonator Orgun. Of concern was whether the dubs done by Manga UK would be used for them. Apparently CPM has decided that since they've never done a dub for it in the US, they're creating new English language tracks to be used for both shows. Of particular interest to many, fan favorite Jessica Calvello (recently seen providing much footage in outtakes on Demon Fighter Kocho for Media Blasters), will be appearing in both of the new dubs. And speaking of CPM, don't forget about their Utena Contest!

Alternate angles (12:45 PM EST): Due to an email snafu, we just got in about 300 email messages from the past couple of weeks. Here's some of the reviews that were sent in:

Newly reviewed (11:56 AM EST): Next in line for our reviews is Media Blaster's release of Twin Signal.

Newly reviewed (11:22 AM EST): Next in line for our reviews is Pioneer's release of Sailor Moon S TV Vol. #2.

Newly reviewed (10:49 AM EST): First up for our reviews this weekend we've taken a look at Agent Aika Vol. #2, newly released this week from Central Park Media. Later this weekend we'll have a full review for Orphen Vol. #1 and Nadia Vol. #1 as well.

El Hazard tidbit (10:08 AM EST): One bit of information that's cropped up recently, but I can't recall if we covered it or not, the El-Hazard box set is going to have something extra special for Japanese language fans. The original seven episodes of the OVA series are getting not only the original Japanese 2.0 track, but the Japanese 5.1 Dolby Digital track. While there isn't a huge amount of moments in this show where the 5.1 mix is necessary, it does have some great moments towards the climactic battles and the 5.1 track will also let people hear the remixed opening song. There will be no English 5.1 remix however.

New in R2 (09:49 AM EST): The folks at CD Japan have sent out their latest missive listing a number of DVD and CD releases coming up in a few months time if not sooner.

Petitions (09:44 AM EST): Bit of an update in our petitions section, with the Hyper Police petition now moved to a new location and the addition of a Samurai Pizza Cats petition.

More on NuTech (01:38 PM EST):
After a brief follow-up with the folks at NuTech, my primary fear (and one I'm sure other hentai consumers are generally fearful of), we've learned that the upcoming releases that they're doing will not be dubtitled, but will be properly subtitled scripts. Phew! I'm definitely now looking forward to seeing how these discs come out, both in the dub and the sub.

New title announcements (08:12 PM EST):
A few more announcements in this evening:

More on City Hunter 2 (07:58 PM EST): According to new information posted on the forum, ADV is now accepting preorders for this title from residents in the UK. The discs will be region 1 and 2 coded, but UK folks need to remember that they will be NTSC encoded, not PAL. But most UK anime owners have NTSC capability to begin with so it's not a big deal. The page will now allow you to make your order, but the shipping is still being researched and will be updated later. ADV's license for City Hunter is being looked at for other regions, but at this time they can only send the sets to people with US, Canadian and UK addresses. There may be a list to gauge other areas as they definitely want to market this title as much as they can, so you Australians settle down for a day or two.

More new Nutech info (07:55 PM EST): We conversed briefly with the folks at NuTech this afternoon and culled some interesting information. First and foremost, the discs will definitely be bilingual and there will be subtitles. Apparently NuTech has the exclusive distribution rights for all
new Pink Pineapple releases. So those keeping track of their releases in Japan may want to enlighten the unwashed masses! We've also been told that the other titles, mentioned earlier in today's news, should be getting their promotion soon with listing the other various English language actresses taking a crack at the anime world.

New Nutech info (02:03 PM EST): The news page over at AnimeNation has updated with some information about Nutech and their upcoming releases. Apparently they're making a play at becoming an actual player in the anime field without sublicensing from other studios:

NuTech Digital, manufacturer of several DVD titles for Central Park Media and Right Stuf, including Tokyo Babylon, Cyber City, La Blue Girl and Imma Youjo, has announced that they will be entering the domestic anime market with the license to several existing hentai anime series and all forthcoming Pink Pineapple releases. NuTech currently has plans for American bilingual DVD releases of several excellent hentai series including Welcome to Pia Carrot, Blackmail (Kyuohaku), Inmu, Koihime, Desert Island Story (Mujintoh Monogatari series 1 & 2), Shyusaku and Shyusaku Replay, and Angels in the Court. The DVD versions will subtitles and dubbing performed by adult video industry stars including Asia Carrera and Rayveness. The DVDs will be released individually and as boxed sets.

The one graphic I had seen of the Shusaku and Inmu shows made no mention of the discs being bilingual, so we'll do a bit more footwork to confirm. But if this does prove to be true, then domestic hentai fans are going to get some quite interesting shows coming their way this year.

New title announcement (12:21 PM EST): Having just gotten in my most recent Animerica magazine, it was interesting to note a blurb on the ad Viz runs for their Ranma titles. According to the blurb, they intend to release one Ranma 1/2 DVD (from season 6) every month from May until I believe January 2002. I certainly hope they can pull it off, and just to keep them on track, they're now announcing a 7/24/2001 street date for Ranma 1/2: Season 6 Vol. #3. The 78 minute disc is bilingual and will retail for 29.99$.

Rayearth TV (09:30 PM EST):
While a lot of us are waiting for the Season 2 box set of Magic Knight Rayearth to be released, some good news for those who've been wanting to check out Season 1. According to a brief mention in the forum today by John Sirabella of Media Blasters, the Season 1 discs will be released individually starting in August. We'll likely start hearing some more details within the next month or so.

New title announcements (05:08 PM EST): Two new ones up today according to Right Stuf. Dragon Ball Z 51: World Tournament: Junior Division with a running time of 61 minutes and Dragon Ball Z 21 Frieza: Transformation with a running time of 78 minutes will arrive on 6/12/2001. Retail for both is 24.95$ and they are bilingual.

City Hunter 2 (05:00 PM EST): The pre-order direct from ADV for the first ADV Fansub DVD is now open with the 5 disc set of the first half of the City Hunter 2 season up for a starting price of 124.98$. If the set can generate over 8000 interested folks, the price drops down to an incredible 50$. Let's get this bad boy made!

Monday, May 7th, 2001

It's open! (05:54 PM EST):
The folks at AnimEigo have opened the preordering for the Urusei Yatsura 2 TV box set, which means another 5 discs of Lum goodness is almost upon us! With a few special pre-order online direct only kind of things running these days, I've opted to put that at the top of the page for now. Later this week it'll move to one of the sidebars.

New title announcements (01:24 PM EST): Looks like a few more announcements have made their way out today. According to Right Stuf, 7/24/2001 will see the release of Oh! My Goddess Vol. #1 containing OVA's 1-3 for 24.95$. On 8/28/2001, Oh! My Goddess Vol. #2 containing OVA's 4-5 will arrive for 24.95$ as well. So now all we need to do is wait for the summer con season for someone to announce the acquisition of both the theatrical movie and the mini-goddesses. Someone must get these after all!

New title announcement (01:12 PM EST): They're at it again... David Williams of ADV posted this morning that their next series to come out this summer now has a date: Getter Robo Vol. #1 will arrive on 7/17/2001. I believe there's a trailer for it on Gasaraki #5 as well, and classic looking giant robot fans are going to be in for a treat.

Studio Challenge (07:44 AM EST):
Our Studio Challenge has been updated this morning with the last picture now that we've finally found our digital camera. Suffice to say, I think the original challenge is going to end early this year...

Newly reviewed (07:22 AM EST): Getting another disc closer to watching Slayers Try (ok, I can't say that without laughing), we've dug into the pile again last night and pulled out Nightwalker Vol. #1, a quite nice disc with six episodes out of the twelve episodes made. And the hook for those of you who may have passed this up? Maaya Sakamoto of Escaflowne provides a solid performance here.

Newly reviewed (11:59 AM EST):
Digging into our to-watch pile again, we've taken in Media Blasters release of Rurouni Kenshin Vol. #5 and have compiled our thoughts on this five episode disc.

Advance review (10:49 AM EST): Due out on 5/29, ADV's release of Neon Genesis Evangelion Collection 0:7 begins the final arc of the series and the emotional and mental collapse of half of the cast. Woo! Let the anguish commence!

Advance review (09:52 AM EST): Due out on 5/22, ADV's release of Gasaraki Vol. #5 will definitely enthrall the junkies of this show. The same level of quality is there with the disc and the story itself only continues to grow and expand.

Hentai update (08:09 AM EST): A bit more information has come in this morning regarding the Shusaku and Inmu titles listed yesterday. Still no information on whether they'll be bilingual, but it appears these Pink Pineapple anime shows may have something different - actual adult movie actresses portraying some of the characters. According to the sell sheet, Asia Carrera and Rayveness will be participating and the box art shows pics of them on the cover as well. Finally, hentai with proper sounding dubs? You be the judge!

New title announcements (04:24 PM EST):
The people at Nutech Digital have acquired some new hentai anime and are releasing it in singles and box sets. Shusaku Box Set 1-4 is due on 6/30/2001 for 79.99$ and Inmu Box Set 1-2 is due on 6/30/2001 for 39.95$. The individual discs retail for 24.95$ so the boxes are a bit of a deal. The kicker? According to the information posted about it at Right Stuf, they're dub only. Can you guess what I'm not going to bother picking up? And if you believe Nutech's release date, you'll note that their January solicitation for Votoms is now five months late.

Tylor replacements (08:39 PM EST):
Shawne Kleckner of TRSI posted some new information regarding the swap-out for the fourth volume of the Irresponsible Captain Tylor (which means the slackers out there like myself really need to get moving and send in the receipt):

These will begin shipping probably tomorrow. The shipment will include the replacement disc, along with a set of limited edition postcards which are not sold in stores.
The discs will be sent by mail and will take about 1-2 weeks to arrive. They are coming in hard mailers so there should hopefully be no problems.

You can tell the "new" disc from the "old" disc by the characters on the silkscreen. The "new" disc has Tylor on the right, whereas the old disc does not have Tylor on it at all.

New shipments of the DVD set and disc will have a sticker saying "13+" on them, so that they can be easily identified. Old sets do not have this sticker.

Thanks to everyone who was patient as we fixed this issue.

Best regards,
Shawne Kleckner

Newly reviewed (01:48 PM EST): Digging into our bins for something to watch the over the past couple of days, we pulled out and have finalized our review for Saber Marionette J Collection 1.

Samurai Swap (11:52 AM EST): For those who were interested in getting the corrected reversible covers for ADV's release of Samurai X: The Movie, the info has come out.

Send a "stamped, self addressed envelope" suitable to send the replacement outer wrap to:

A.D. Vision Return
5050 Laguna Blvd Suite. 112
PMB #360
Elk Grove, Ca. 95758

They will accept and process returns from May 1 - June 30th. Expect to  receive  the replacements in 2-3 weeks.

Please note that this offer/swap is not going to the ADV offices, but the place where the covers were mis-pressed. They are not requesting you send in the original cover. If you have concerns about how the new cover will be sent back, the safer the package you send to them the safer it will come back, since you're sending them what you want it back in.

New interview (06:53 PM EST):
Yep, check the arrogant attitude that I've got, which shows up nicely in the interview I did with the folks at Anime Dorks. Of course, when you're online, you sometimes have a stronger persona than offline. Only those who know me in person can say (and most of them are simply out to get my collection of discs, so I wouldn't trust them either! muahahahaha).

Quick look (06:52 PM EST): Some alert readers sent us a note that the artwork for the Mobile Suit Gundam: MS 08th Team is now out, which you can check via that link.

Alternate angles (01:49 PM EST): Since I know a number of people don't care for my content reviews, we've got more alternate angle reviews up and ready to roll today, giving everyone more varied opinions to read, which in my view is a good thing:

New contests (01:36 PM EST): Two new contests are now underway here. The first is the TRSI sponsored one for the new out of print Battle Angel DVD while the second is for the Black Heaven TV series (er, most of it at least). Expect to see more contests this month.

New title announcement (07:44 AM EST): The Right Stuf site has updated and now lists a 7/10/2001 release date for Cardcaptors Vol. #5.
